Reproclaiming the Everlasting Gospel
Following is an excerpt from Sermon II (That Thy Candles May Always Be Burning) that we were reading and considering on our recent monthly call. We found this to be a very deep and searching time.
So keep the Sabbath; think not your own thoughts, for we are atop of that nature in Christ where evil thoughts are, that nature being taken away by Christ. So you should not think your own thoughts, do your own works, speak your own words. In the outward Sabbath there were not to do it, much less [should we] being in our rest, to wit, in Christ who is our Sabbath of rest. Therefore, they should not go out to gather their meat being entered into [their] rest.
Art thou entered into thy Sabbath's rest, Christ Jesus? And wilt thou go out of him to gather thy meat? Is not Christ that comes from above, your manna, your meat? And hast thou any raiment but from him? Is it not he that arrays you in fine linen, clean and white, which is the righteousness of the saints, Rev. 19:8? So now they should not go out to gather their meat, for there is no need in Christ, in whom we have all a better life.
Now all Christendom say they are believers, but are they entered into their rest? Have they ceased from their own works, and are their works wrought in God, who works in us "both to will and to do according to his good pleasure" (Phil. 2:13) So People must cease from their own works. Therefore, if this Sabbath must be kept, then they are kept into the holy One, the righteous One, the new Man, through whom we please the Lord. So I say to everyone, Keep the rest, the Sabbath, and then none shall need go out to gather meat nor stick to make them a fire, as the Scripture saith, to walk in the light of that fire and in the sparks they have kindled (Isaiah 50:11), But, saith the Lord, "ye shall lie down in sorrow." What is the end of all professions in the world but a kindling of their own sparks?
Now all that are gathered into Christ are in their rest. If so, what burdening is there one of another? So you keep in the heavenly Man from whom none is to go forth to gather sticks or meat. If they want life, peace, and joy, there it is to be had; if wisdom and salvation, it is to be had in Him who is the treasure and fountain of wisdom and all good. Out of his fullness we receive, etc. So everyone keep the Sabbath, your rest; keep to him who was before darkness was.
Thanks Ellis for this post. Do you have any more of Fox's on Sabbath? I joyfully receive this inward view of Sabbath keeping. In my society where there is very little outward Sabbath keeping, it seems very good to focus on this inward interpretation of keeping the Sabbath. I myself aspire to both this inward and the outward keeping of the Sabbath.
Yeshe, I can find more and post it here, but it will be a little while. I have many other things to respond to also. So if I seem to have forgotten, please take the liberty of joggling me. Ellis
