Dialogue on Quaker Understanding of Free Will

This is a transcript of a dialogue between Stuart Masters and me that occurred in early to mid-December 2017 in the comment section of Stuart’s blog post “Friends of Martin Luther? Quakers and the Protestant Reformation.” The point I challenged was Stuart’s assertion that by a free act of will man participates in his transformation from sinner to saint. I contended early Quaker understanding…

Introduction to "The Gospel and Self-Knowledge"

The following introductory essay was first posted on my blog site, Abiding Quaker, and can be found there in the archives under February 2019. The lecture by Lewis Benson that is introduced in this essay can be found on this New Foundation Fellowship site under the Resources tab. Here is a link to this…

His Seed Remaineth

Having faith, [a person] can thrive even when planted in the chaos of the world that lies in wickedness, even as a sycamine tree could be planted in a hostile environment of the sea (Lk. 17:6). Having faith, the hearing/obeying relationship with his Creator, man is restored, strengthened, and empowered to withstand and rise above such assaults upon his soul. He is given the power of God to rule over his human nature and to…

Hi Pat,
Glad you've signed up. If you can, please try out the site, and try adding some of your material. The site won't be going live for a while, so please feel to experiment, then let me know what you think

It sounds like it might be well to wait for the 2015 publication to come out before purchasing.  I'll see what I can find out about it.  Thanks, Pat...

Thank you for the welcoming words. Perhaps this is the place to say a few words about myself.

I am a retired speech and language pathologist. I live in San Mateo, California. I was born and raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts and raised as a Roman Catholic. Some twenty five years ago I first learned of Quakerism through chance reading, and became especially interested in the principles and beliefs of early and traditional Friends. I also have an ongoing interest in early Christianity of the first three centuries since even before that time. I can read the Koine Greek of the New Testament.

I have had an association with Ohio Conservative Quakers for some twenty  years. Two years ago I became an affiliate member of Middleton Friends Meeting in Columbiana, Ohio (Ohio Yearly Meeting (Conservative)). But living in San Mateo, California, I attend Palo Friends Meeting, a local liberal Friends meeting.

I look forward to learning more about authentic traditional Quaker teachings and beliefs and participating on this New Foundation Fellowship website.

Thank you for introducing yourself, Henry. I hope you feel encouraged to join in our discussions and to post essays of your own. Please also feel free to comment on any of the earlier posts, if you wish. You've had a long-time interest in early Friends--as have many of us--and I look forward to your contributions.

Some of us also have connections to Ohio YM (Conservative). Terry Wallace is a member there and has been active with NFF for decades, also Arthur Berk. I attended the yearly meeting in Barnesville a few times, and now and then have met with Keystone Fellowship here in Pennsylvania. Also, in 2001, I traveled in the ministry in France with Nancy Hawkins. Jack and Susan Smith have attended our gatherings often. So, there's been quite a bit of overlap.

Again, glad you found your way here!
