When l say we must have Christ crucified within, what l mean us, that we must come to a point where we 'put Him back on the cross' having committed the fault of the Ephesians who sought to serve in the flesh instead of going on in the spirit which denies the work of faith in the believers life.

I think it is such a shame that preachers who haver studied Greek and Hebrew, are not teaching their congregations, at least enough for them to want to learn for themselves as there is so much that Western versions miss. I wonder whether Fox had to rethink some things with the input of Barclay (he was still alive?) One good thing is that some of the things that Dr Eli has said, have been opened up to me by the Spirit since my union with Christ so I alpready knew them but did not learn therm from the church's teachings.

I agree that her writings are more like the 18th C Quakers which I guess may have been due to the influence of Wesley and his teaching on the second blessing, which perhaps the early Quakers had moved away from, even though they would not have named it as such.

Thanks for recapitulating your comment, Brenda. I'm glad you found the essay worth further consideration. The Lattimore translation is useful, but I'd prefer it if the verses were numbered; it'd make locating material easier. I was surprised to discover Guyon was born in 1648, just 24 years after Fox. Her writing style seems to be more like the 18th c. Quakers. I suppose Quietism started on the continent and then spread to the English-speaking countries.

Patricia it was because l accidentally clicked on remove, and l was going to repost it later, so will just do so now.

I said that l found a great deal to think about and l appreciated your post. I have also ordered Lattimores translation so thank you also for that. I mentioned the theory of atonement that says Jesus died because of the anger of men which had to be appeased rather than the anger if God though He hates sin.

I mentioned that l noticed at one time that l would get angry as a first impulse whenever l would accidentally hurt myself, but when l loved God l never felt that anger impulse.

Also l have found Guy on to be helpful though agree with the criticism that she was too much influenced by Quietism. Nevertheless she was very wise on spirituality.

I would love to explore these ideas further. I agree with the idea of suffering greatly, or as St John of the Cross called it, The Dark Night of the Soul, before union with Christ.
Thank you for your comment, B…tag:nffquaker.org,2019-11-13:6286598:Comment:397052019-11-13T16:25:31.165ZPatricia Dallmannhttp://nffquaker.org/profile/PatriciaDallmann
